Description
Challenges the premise that the defeat of France in World War II was the result of a misplaced reliance on the Maginot Line for its defense.

Reviews:
-[T]his is an excellent and well-researched book and the fullest account in English so far. —The Bulletin of the Military Historical Society
-[D]escribes the background and development both of the Maginot Line between the world wars to protect France from a German ground assault, and of coastal defenses France developed to provide additional security. —Reference & Research Book News
-"Fortress France is an excellent guide to all aspects of French military doctrine and policy in the decade before the German invasion. Full of details, it would make an excellent addition to the collection of any historian interested in the other side of the 1940 campaign or the minutiae of fortification construction. Service school libraries would certainly benefit by adding this book to their collections." —Army History
