Description
From immigrant songs to rap, parlor songs to Dixieland, Appalachian string music to classical, Discovering Folk Music presents the genre as surprisingly diverse, and every bit the product of our national melting pot. The book spotlights an amazing array of American folk stars, with special emphasis on the great folk revival period of the 1950s and 1960s, a time when iconic figures like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Odetta set the stage for the new generation that included the likes of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Richie Havens—individuals who would themselves go on to influence contemporary performers like Shawn Colvin and Ani DiFranco. Those on today’s “fringes of folk” scene continue to look to these deep roots while embracing alternative arrangements and instrumentation. Coverage also includes a look at many of the typical instruments employed in folk music, and a survey of the current international folk scene. Discovering Folk Music is a ground-breaking look at 21st-century folk music, taking into account ever-evolving technologies.
