Description
Building on the success of The Strangest Dinosaur That Never Was (Libraries Unlimited, 2003), a storybook approach to teaching Web site evaluation to young learners, this set of books is the first in a series of three that focus on teaching the inquiry process to young learners. In the interactive storybook, Mac the Information Detective introduces the beginning stages of the research process—The Big Question, Narrowing It Down, and Making a Plan—to the curious kids who have found a caterpillar and want to know how to keep him alive until he becomes a beautiful butterfly. Accompanying the storybook is an educator's guide featuring lesson plans, extension ideas, vocabulary words, and reproducible worksheets for teaching the inquiry process. The lessons are all coordinated to AASL information literacy standards and national content area standards in language arts and science, and are designed to be used collaboratively by the classroom teacher and teacher librarian. Grades K-3.

Encouraging collaboration between the classroom and library media teacher, this title presents the beginning stages of the research process through the adventures of the Curious Kids and Mac....Interactive pages throughout the book encourage teaching opportunities, as well as student reflection and personal application. The accompanying educator's guide is a valuable asset that provides tools and lessons for presentation, encourages preplanning, and sparks creative thought and activities. Especially helpful to teachers and librarians are the educator's guide activity sheets and suggestions to continue the research process. Picture books are always an effective way to teach specific concepts, and this book proves their effectiveness through creative presentation of the research process. Recommended.
