-The body of this work is an alphabetical list of German playwrights entered under their most-used names with alternates given and cross-references provided. For each name, dates, and places of birth and death are given where available, along with references of the author's appearances in biographical sources. There follows a list of each writer's plays with codes indicating genre; number of acts; a date of publication (although not necessarily the first or only date); the language of the original if the play is an adaptation . . . and dates of performance in the ten cities whose theaters are included. There is an index to titles. In an economical introduction, the compiler explains that she has extracted the performance data from a group of German theater histories; the work is therefore as accurate and as selective as its sources. A vast amount of information is here, certainly, and since the source works are likely to be available only in large libraries, this is a sound acquisition for college and university collections serving theater history and German literature programs. —Choice
