  • Endorsement From Gretchen M. Bataille
Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
    University of North Carolina:
Krahenbuhl has been a presenter at national meetings and a frequent visitor to campuses to meet with deans and provosts seeking to learn how to be a successful dean or how to hire and evaluate deans. His ten years as dean of the largest college at Arizona State University during a time of unprecedented growth and his presidency of the Council of the Colleges of Arts and Sciences have provided just about every experience a dean might encounter--from lawsuits to internal reorganization, from downsizing to seeking donor funds, and from chair development to faculty hiring. This is a 'handbook' for new deans and a book that will make a difference in their success.
  • Endorsement From Samuel A. Kirkpatrick, President
    Eastern Michigan University:
This 'handbook' is must reading for academic deans, aspiring deans and other university leaders who work to convert sound principles into practice. After many years of successful experience in the deanship, as well as on the faculty and in the central administration, the author has written a comprehensive and practical guide for decanal leadership. The text addresses every conceivable aspect of the contemporary dean's roles as both a college and campus-wide leader, it is filled with innovative strategies for success, and it is grounded in sound principles which impart an enlightened philosophy of leadership.
  • Endorsement From Ernest J. Peck, Executive Director
Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences:
Building the Academic Deanship: Strategies for Success speaks volumes on the subject of 'deans and deaning.' Gary brings to the reader his experiences as dean as well as his recent three-year tenure as Senior Vice President at ASU. Also in evidence is his experience with national networking organizations such as the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences. This book offers advice and useful examples for tackling both the mundane and the thorny, unusual issues of the deanship.
Building the Academic Deanship: Strategies for Success is an up-to-date guide for easing your transition into the deanship and for retaining an even keel as you navigate its sometimes-troubled waters. Use this book and you will gain confidence. You may even enjoy a full and productive life as dean.
  • Endorsement From William A. Corvino, Dean
Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters
    Florida Atlantic University:
As a new dean, I found Gary Krahenbuhl's Building the Academic Deanship invaluable. Krahenbuhl anticipates many of the challenges and duties that I faced over my first year, and provides me not only with expert advice, but with great models for the drafting of College policies and proceedures. He provides a perspective that is both experienced and current, well-suited to administrators working in the 21st century university. The book is thoughtfully organized, beginning with an initial orientation for both new and prospective deans, and continuing with a comprehensive discussion of the field of relationships (to faculty, students, administration) that the dean's life comprises. I keep two books on my desk for ready reference, Webster's Dictionary and Krahenbuhl's Building the Academic Deanship.
  • Endorsement From Krumble R. Subbaswamy,
    College of Arts and Sciences
    Indiana University, Bloomington:
While there are books that are reflective and autobiographical as well as books that are theoretical, there is none as practical and enlightening as this book on deanship by Gary Krahenbuhl.
Description: Unlike many positions, there are no formal professional programs for those seeking positions of academic leadership. Promotions in all fields involve a period of learning. It is difficult to imagine anyone moving to a new leadership position and being fully prepared to perform from the first day. Colleges today, like corporations, operate in a competitive world and at a time of great change. Each decision made by a dean may reshape a college and affects its competitive advantage either positively or negatively. The purpose of Building the Academic Deanship: Strategies for Success is to acquaint individuals either who are newly appointed deans or who are about to become academic deans with the typical challenges that come with such leadership positions. What works in one setting is almost never immediately transportable to another setting. To be helpful, a book such as this is successful only if it helps the reader develop a mind better prepared to lead a college. The organization of Gary Krahenbuhl's book is clear and concise, and the amount of information presented is enormous when one considers the length of the book--it is all practical and helpful. Author Gary S. Krahenbuhl is perfectly suited to provide the key to success for the newly appointed dean, or an academic who is interested in deanship in the future. This extremely practical book has been written by an author who was, for eleven years, a very successful dean of the ASU College Liberal Arts and Sciences. During that time he gave dozens of talks at professional meetings and was invited to many university campuses as a speaker and consultant. Presently, as Senior Vice President at ASU, he sees the dean's role from the position of supervisor and mentor. Dr. Krahenbuhl also served a term as president of the 570 member Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences and served for five years as the Convener (like the President) of the Council for the Arts and Sciences in Urban Universities. Professional colleagues who have heard him speak have encouraged him to write this book, because they thought his ideas would be very useful to academic deans.
