  • In this four-volume set, the influence of popular culture, media, and technology on literacy in our society is thoroughly discussed. Each volume covers a specific portion of our lives--early literacy, childhood literacy, adolescent literacy, and adult literacy--in great detail including current trends, and assessment and instruction. For those who are studying the field or who have a special interest in this area, this is a comprehensive work.

  • Each volume is structured similarly and addresses common topics. Each includes classic, foundational topics as well more cutting-edge issues and is organized into three sections addressing recent trends and issues for that age range, issues in assessment and instruction, and issues that influence literacy practice and development outside the classroom. Additionally, each volume includes issues of federal legislation, funding, and polices affecting literacy assessment instruction and practice; age-specific literacy development and assessment; digital technology and literacy; and the influence of youth and popular culture in literacy instruction. As a whole, the set is intended to provide an accessible introduction to the field of literacy to an audience with little or no prior knowledge of the field.

Description: Living in an age of communication, literacy is an extremely integral part of our society. We are impacted by literature during our infancy, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. This four volume set includes information from specialists in the field who discuss the influence of popular culture, media, and technology on literacy. Together, they offer a comprehensive outline of the study and practice of literacy in the United States.

Title Features:
The first volume, Early Literacy, covers infancy and early childhood. Topics such as oral language development, phonics, beginning writing, storytelling and drama, and instruction for second language learners and special needs children are all addressed.

Volume two, Childhood Literacy, includes information on popular approaches to reading instruction, children's literature, spelling, computer and instructional technology, book clubs, and after-school programs.

Adolescent Literacy, the third volume, covers supplementary literacy programs for at-risk adolescents, literacy tutors, young adult literature, gender issues, digital literacy, and blogging.

Finally, volume four, Adult Literacy, offers chapters on adult basic education, programs for English language learners, and workplace literacy.
