American airmen, both Navy and Air Force, have been continually striving to achieve precision strikes in high altitude, long ranges, or in darkness. From the Wright Brothers evolution of airpower until current times, the search for precision attack from standoff distances or altitudes is imperative to national objectives with expenditure of American lives, treasure and time. This work emphasizes theory and doctrine, technology, tactics and strategy when looking at the evolution of air power. Not only does Mets deal with the combat side of this evolution, but also the intellectual process involved in the preparation of airpower. Through careful examination, he shows the preparation of airpower regarding training and equipment for efficiency both in times of peace and in war. American airpower has proven to be one of the most imperative resources in both military combat and intellectual process. However, the attack from standoff distances or altitudes has been a continual struggle in achieving precision strikes. These strikes are important to the preservation of American lives and in attaining quick results with minimum cost and time. This work is a chronological treatment of the evolution of airpower from the Wright Brothers to 2007. This single volume synthesis of the history of American airpower emphasizes theory and doctrine, technology, tactics and strategy, in times of peace and war. Mets details combat experience and intellectual processes, both lethal and non-lethal, which are involved in the preparation of airpower. Through a general history of airpower, both Naval and Air Force, this work is mapped out as a guide to past and future generations of airpower.
