Reviews:
As the 50th anniversary of Pearl Harbor approaches, interest in the US war with Japan has increased. Controvich's bibliography is aimed at anyone seeking to read about a pivotal campaign in that conflict--the 1943-1944 American offensive in the Central Pacific. The work is comprehensive for published literature up to 1989. It is organized with sections on general reference works; general histories in which the Central Pacific campaign is touched on; memoirs and biographies; sections on operations in each of the island chains (Gilberts, Marshalls, and Marianas) subdivided by individual islands; and sections on unit histories for the US Army Airforce, Army, Marine Corps, and navy respectively. There is cross-referencing by name and author; the table of contents serves as the subject index. Each entry has a short, one or two sentence summary of contents. This source should have particular appeal for those looking for unit histories and detailed accounts of the Central Pacific campaign strategy in WW II will also find this source useful. The short annotations do not provide much guidance as to an item's value. That limitation aside, however, interested students, scholars, veterans, and `buffs' will find this work invaluable. Recommended for all academic libraries having large WW II collections or supporting WW II studies.

Description:
Controvich has compiled a thorough guide to the literature surrounding some of America's most famous World War II amphibious operations. Famous for the fights at Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Guam, and for its strategic ramifications, the Central Pacific Campaign was a unique and almost totally American effort. The author cites books, memoirs, monographs, periodical/journal articles, documents, theses and dissertations, and unit histories about this crucial campaign.
"This source should have particular appeal for those looking for unit histories and detailed accounts of the Central Pacific battles. Readers studying how this campaign fit into overall American strategy in World War II will also find this source useful. . . . Interested students, scholars, veterans, and 'buffs' will find this work invaluable."
