  • This compilation by authors from the University of Guam continues bibliographies of Fujio Uchinomi, Bibliography of Micronesia (1952), and M. Marshall and J. D. Nason, Micronesia, 1944-1974. The style of composition is similar, with geographic and subject indexes. Although works referring to the medical aftermath of atom bomb tests are included, the subject reference is under medicine. This new work does, however, depart from the Marshall and Nason book by including Kiribati (the Gilbert Islands) and Nauru. The emphasis is indicated by the subtitle, and particular attention is paid to acculturation. Manuscripts and unpublished conference papers are included, but not a full range of government publications. ERIC and NTIS documents are included. All libraries owning the Marshall and Nason book should buy this update. Libraries with an interest in the Pacific who do not own the earlier bibliographies should try to obtain a complete set.

  • The value of a bibliography is that it serves as a record of the literature on a specified subject and time period. It greatly assists researchers and saves lots of time by identifying the bibliographic facts about work already accomplished. As a comprehensive record of publications on Micronesia, this bibliography is excellent. While it is not casual bed time reading, it will be of high interest of professional anthropologists, archaeologists, home economists, gerontologists, educators, demographers, folklorists, historians, linguists, physicians, psychologists psychiatrists, librarians, and other social scientists and scholars interested in Micronesia. This book belongs in all adult libraries in Micronesia, and many professional people and government officials will want an office copy. As is the case with many reference publications, the number of copies printed is limited, so order now. Highly recommended.

Description: The most up-to-date compilation of bibliographical sources on anthropology and related cultural subjects in Micronesia, this work provides easy access to the sizeable body of literature written about the area in the twelve-year period covered. The compilers' liberal selection criteria make this social science resource especially thorough and valuable. Many of the more than 1800 cited documents are of cross-disciplinary interest and are accordingly indexed under two or more subject terms or geographical areas. Geographically, the area covered by this material includes the Marshall Islands, the Caroline Islands, the Mariana Islands, plus Nauru and Kiribati, two areas which are culturally a part of Micronesia. Specific island names are found in the geographical index which is preceded by a helpful list of island names used as well as their alternate names and variant spellings. Although scientific material unless it addresses cultural aspects has not been included, reports of the effects of radio active fallout in the Marshall Islands are cited due to the impact this issue has had and continues to have on residents and their way of life. In this volume's context, the term "psychology" encompasses not only psychological and psychiatric elements of Micronesian cultures, but is also assigned to works dealing with alcohol and drug abuse and the problem of suicide in Micronesia. Books, journal articles, dissertations, theses, government documents, conference papers, popular magazine articles, monographs, periodical articles and unpublished manuscripts are among the wealth of sources indexed. Reviews of works are included only when they contain substantial discussion of their subject matter and provide reactions to the theories posited by such work.
