Description: In 1800, Europeans governed about one-third of the world's land surface; by the start of World War I in 1914, Europeans had imposed some form of political or economic ascendancy on over 80 percent of the globe. The basic structure of global and European politics in the twentieth century was fashioned in the previous century out of the clash of competing imperial interests and the effects, both beneficial and harmful, of the imperial powers on the societies they dominated. This encyclopedia offers current, detailed information on the major world powers and their global empires, as well as on the people, events, ideas, and movements, both European and non-European, that shaped the Age of Imperialism.

About the Author: Carl Cavanagh Hodge is an associate professor of political science and director of the International Relations Program at the University of British Columbia-Okanagan. He holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from Carleton University and a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics. He is a former Senior Volkswagen Research Fellow with the American Institute of Contemporary German Studies at The Johns Hopkins University and a former NATO-EAPC Fellow. His books include U.S. Presidents and Foreign Policy: From 1789 to the Present (2007), Atlanticism for a New Century: The Rise, Triumph and Decline of NATO (2004), Politics in North America: Canada, Mexico and the United States, with Robert J. Jackson, Gregory Mahler, and Holly Reynolds (2003), and NATO for a New Century: Expansion and Intervention in the Atlantic Alliance (2002).
