Most available books on flightless birds, nocturnal animals, and hibernation are for a juvenile audience, or they focus narrowly on particular animals (e.g., penguins) rather than giving a broad overview. Undergraduates in zoology will find these books useful. Recommended. Lower-/upper-level undergraduates, two-year technical program students, and general readers.

  • Editor's Choice Information on nocturnal animals is relatively limited, especially when it is written for general adult audiences, and not advanced-degree students or scientists and researchers. Root's purpose is to summarize for the reader the unique and necessary adaptations these animals have developed that allow them to successfully live their lives in darkness, just as we do in daylight. These adaptations are not only physical, but behavioral as well. The text is clearly written and well organized....This book is very well done and serves as a solid introduction to nocturnal animals; it would be suitable for high school readers and older in both public school and academic libraries.

There are many starling facts here: those of us perpetually low on our kangaroo supply will find they are nocturnal, as are porcupines and a number of wild cats, and warthogs have gone nocturnal due to excessive persecution, much to their further decimation.
