Description: The house, throughout history, in every place in the world, has been built to provide shelter from the elements. The dwellings that have resulted are as different as the people that have built them, the social norms that prevailed at the time and place in which they were built and the natural environment that they adapted to. Studying them now in a comprehensive way allows us to understand the social, political, economic and religious conditions that existed for their inhabitants. They are a three-dimensional record of culture. Twenty-four pages of color images, along with black and white images through three volumes, illustrate the homes of people throughout the world. The volumes cover ancient times to the late Middle Ages, the Renaissance to the Industrial Revolution, and the Post-Industrial Revolution to the Present.

About the Author: James Steele received a Bachelor of Arts degree as an English Major from Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. and both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. He practiced architecture in and around the Philadelphia area for twelve years and became registered in Pennsylvania before relocating to Saudi Arabia where he taught for eight years at King Faisal University in Dammam. He then moved to London, and served as Senior Editor of Architectural Design magazine, while also teaching at the Prince of Wales's Institute for Architecture. Since 1991, he has taught at the University of Southern California, where he has also received a Doctorate in Urban Planning and is now a tenured Professor there. He has written extensively about both traditional and contemporary architecture and has had several books published.
