Description: Emotional public responses to widely publicized right -to-die and euthanasia cases such as those revolving around Dr. Jack Kevorkian and Terri Schiavo highlight their volatile mix of medical, ethical, religious, legal, and public policy issues. Advances in medicine and palliative care have heightened the debate and transformed its terms. Yet this book reveals that such issues have long been the subject of controversy in America. Over time they have been framed in different ways: as primarily matters of individual rights, administrative law, or medical judgment. The author assesses the historical record up to the present and considers the way forward on one of the most contentious ethical issues of our time.
