Reviews:
  • Friedl is a librarian and it shows. All parts of the book, from the title to the index, clearly and carefully define the author's approach. Not content to compile a list of brief citations, the author has organized the 857 annotated entries around military units, subjects, time periods, and types of publication, and has provided a chapter on conducting research on the topic....There is no comparable work. Highly recommended for social science, history, and women's studies collections, uall levels.

  • The role of women in the military will continue to be a topic of discussion whether the issues is combat, families, or homosexuality. The acceptance of women in the armed forces has been evolving from a role of freeing men for combat to equality in all facets of military life. This bibliography and research guide provides extensive information for the researcher.... The preface and introductory chapter 'Conducting Research' is worth reading to see how research of this type should be done... Also, the explanation of the methodology used is of benefit to any researcher or librarian. This unique reference book has no counterpart and will stand as the best source available on women in the U.S. military. It is highly recommended for any collection in military or women's studies.

  • As the only available bibliography on women in the United States military, this volume is unique. The increasing number of women in military schools and the issues surrounding their integration into the armed forces also makes it timely....A groundbreaking work, this volume belongs in any twentieth-century American history collection.

  • What is represented in Friedl's work is a sizable collection of source material on past and present military women, along with an introductory historical backround at the beginning of each chapter to help contexualize the material described. Friedl highlights works that are noteworthy because of their overall quality, originality, or utility for particular kinds of studies.

The publication of Vicki L. Friedl's research guide and annotated bibliography on women in the American military marks the maturing of the field of women's military studies. Every serious researcher will want to consult this volume when embarking on a new project, and beginners will want to browse in it to discover the wealth of fascinating topics open for investigation.
Description: With growing numbers of women in the military and their roles in the Persian Gulf War, Somalia, and Bosnia, there is increasing interest in such issues as their full integration and their role in combat. Yet women's participation in the military is not new, and these very issues have been studied in the past. This book provides the only comprehensive annotated bibliography and research guide on women in the U.S. military, from the establishment of the Army Nurse Corps in 1901 to the first deployment of women on combat ships in 1995. The opening chapter describes how to access available information on women. The following chapters cover women in the military in general; women in the Air Force, Army, Navy and Coast Guard, and Marine Corps; women in nursing corps; women at service academies; and such topics as pregnancy issues, sex issues, women in combat, and women veterans. Each chapter begins with an introduction and includes archival sources as well as books, research reports, theses and dissertations, government documents, and journal entries. The book includes more than 850 entries, all with annotations. Appendices list archival sources, including military historical research centers and military museums, and organizations for military women, and a directory of military world wide web pages. The work also includes a chronology of women's service from 1901 to 1995. The book is an indispensable resource for both the beginning and the experienced researcher.
