  • This book presents descriptions and historical summaries of 164 `nongovernmental, not-for-profit organizations aiding the promotion or performance of basic research and advancement of knowledge.'...A particularly useful feature of the articles is a brief list of additional readings on each organization. Appendixes list the organizations by type, present a chronology and genealogy, provide access by discipline or subject, and list institutional members. Many of the organizations are also contained in Gale's Encyclopedia of Associations (1981, 16th ed.) and Research Centers Directory (1982, 7th ed.), but these volumes emphasize brief current information. Research Institutions and Learned Societies complements rather than substitutes for the Gale compilations, and can be recommended for most academic and large public, and some special libraries.
