  • This bibliography on Mao contains a chronology, a list of his wives and children, a 19-page biographical sketch, a guide to source materials, and 1,030 annotated entries. These entries list English articles and books covering Mao's published works and secondary material: biographies, analyses of his political thought and military strategies, and literary criticism. Its coverage is very extensive but by no means comprehensive. The annotations are sometimes critical and generally accurate, although there are occasional defects, e.g., a typographical error (#991), a missing date of publication (#1027), and outdated information (#992). The use of the Pinyin system for transcribing Chinese characters throughout the volume is a good choice, even though the compiler's statement that Pinyin "is now replacing Wade-Giles in the cataloging system of Western libraries" (p. vii) is not true. Although some libraries in Europe have adopted Pinyin, Wade-Giles is still the system used in US libraries. In light of the lack of any other current bibliographical guide to Mao, who was the subject of many works published in the 1960s and early 1970s, this new bibliography should be a welcome addition to the reference shelf of college and university collections.

Description: This comprehensive work covers Mao Zedong's life and career from his childhood in the 1890s to his death in 1976. The story of Mao, revolutionary leader and statesman, embraces much of the political history of China in the twentieth century. This broad field is subdivided and cross referenced to provide a guide to virtually every book and article written on Mao and available in English. Extensive selections deal with Mao's own writings and the Cultural Revolution. Notable features are the detailed biography, the chronology, the more than one thousand bibliographical references, and the author and subject indexes. This guide to the many faceted world leader, the ideologist, the guerilla fighter and strategist, the poet, the educationalist, the cult figure, and the myth provide a breadth of coverage not available elsewhere. This book is essential for students and scholars of modern China and for those concerned with twentieth-century world history, Asian politics, and international relations.
