  • "Written as a text for undergraduate and graduate courses, this guide is full of practical information for the about-to-be school or public librarian. Its activity-oriented approach to children's literature gives the student a survey of several genres plus ways to use both current and classic books with young patrons in grades K-6. . . . Excellent lists of related resources are included for each genre, as are evaluation criteria with sample reviews. Lists of professional references and books cited complete the work."

  • "This is an excellent resource for a library science student, a new librarian, teacher, or even a seasoned professional. Introducted as a literature textbook designed for librarians and library media specialists, it showcases activities that can help bring children and families together with books, foster a love of reading, and provide effective readers advisory. . . . Sylvia Vardell has taken her experience as a college professor and the experiences of others and created a textbook that gives practical, real-life applications for connecting children with books. It will be useful to librarians long after they graduate. This is definitely a must-have for universities with library science programs and would make a nice addition to any youth librarian's professional and personal collection. Recommended."

  • "Unlike textbooks on childrens literature that are written for teachers, Sylvia M. Vardell's Children's Literature in Action: A Librarian's Guide is written specifically with librarians and library media specialists in mind. It surveys a number of genres, among them picture books, poetry, fantasy, and informational books, and suggests ways to use both current and classic books with young patrons in grades K-6. . . . A wealth of practical applications takes this volume beyond the classroom into the realm of working librarians."

  • "The excellent introduction to children's literature and its various genres and forms offers many activities and practical applications. . . . The book will be especially useful for students studying to be youth-service librarians and school media specialists, but experience librarians will find fresh ideas here, too."

  • "Designed specifically to teach library science professionals how to select, display, and create engaging activities around children's books, this unique textbook also has far-reaching appeal to anyone interested in learning more about children's literature. . . . Written in informal and engaging prose, each chapter presents the historical background, definition, and unique qualificaties of the type of literature described. An especially helpful feature is the inset boxes placed throughout chapters, which give selected bibliographies for further information and present the work of individual authors. The highlighting of these authors and their works offers a helpful model for librarians as they create their own displays and promotions. . . . A comprehensive index allows for easy access to the information presented throughout the book. Two useful bibliographies are also included that could be used to collection building: a bibliography of resources for further study and a bibliography of the works cited. These features make the book an indispensible resource for information proffesionals."

Description: Vardell provides an introduction to children and their literature through an activity-oriented survey of books that should be in your library. Written for librarians, the book offers practical applications to help you share books with children, as well as plans for book-based programs and ways to collaborate with teachers and families to share books with children. Each chapter includes brief insets of author comments, collaborative activities, featured books, special topics and activities, selected awards and celebrations, historical connections, recommended resources, issues for discussion, and assignment suggestions.

The author, a former President of the U.S. Board on Books for Young People, has written an affordable text especially for school and children's librarians and faculty teaching both undergraduate and graduate students who are studying to be school and children's librarians. While similar texts on this subject are designed for teachers, this is an activities-oriented survey of children's literature written especially for students seeking licensure and degrees leading to careers working with children in schools and public libraries. All the pieces are there, the explanations of the genres, introductions to authors and illustrations, and the use of specific titles with their audiences, and the literature is carefully linked to active practice in libraries. Chapters are enriched by brief insets of authors? comments, collaborative activities, selected awards and celebrations, historical connections, recommended resources, issues for discussion, and assignment suggestions.

The framework for this text adds a layer of practical application in every chapter for the librarian who shares books with children, plans book-based programs, and collaborates with teachers and families in sharing books and developing literature-based instruction. What does a librarian need to know about how to select and share books in each genre? What are the usual promotion and collaboration activities associated with each genre? This book answers those questions while maintaining its focus on literature for children. Embedded in a genre approach to literature, it has a unique focus on the librarian or future librarian.
