• A companion to Ohles' Private Colleges and Universities. That work was the first to provide comprehensive historical summaries of more than 1,200 private colleges and universities. Public Colleges and Universities provides a similarly unique contribution for the public sector. Included are 578 sketches as well as descriptions of 31 state systems. Only institutions accredited by regional or national accrediting agencies or candidates for accreditation are listed. Institutional sketches are arranged in alphabetical order; unified states systems are treated as combined entries and listed internally in alphabetical order. With minor exceptions, sketches read well and give a sense of the development of an institution from its roots to the present time. Adequate cross-references are provided, especially for institutions coming under a system umbrella. Four appendixes are provided: years founded, location by states, land-grant institutions, and specialized institutions. Sources used in writing the sketches are conveniently listed at the end of the sketches. This needed reference book will probably be much consulted by library patrons. A worthy addition to the series, highly recommended for academic and general collections.
