After Atlantic, Chess was the most important black-oriented, independent American label. Chess specialized in recording blues, jazz, rhythm-and-blues, gospel, and rock `n' roll, and among its roster of artists are such towering figures as Chuck Berry, Howlin' Wolf, and Muddy Waters. The heart of Ruppli's discography is the 571-page chronological, numerical-by-matrix-number listing of all Chess labels sessions from 1947 to 1975. Session musicians, recording dates, and label numbers are given when available, and can be cross-referenced. Invaluable for researchers, this belongs in all libraries which have found need for the earlier volumes.
