Steven A. Riess STEVEN A. REISS is Professor of History at Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago. He is the author of Touching Base: Professional Baseball and American Culture in the Progressive Era (1980, rev. ed., 1999), City Games: The Evolution of American Urban Society and the Rise of Sports (1989), and Sport in Industrial America, 1850-1920 (1995), and has edited several books including Sports and the American Jew (1998). He edited the Journal of Sport History from 1985-1992, and is the editor of the series "Sports and Entertainment" for Syracuse University Press.
