This new series takes an interdisciplinary approach to the humanities curriculum by relating literary studies to social issues and social history. Each volume examines 12 novels that focus on a specific social issue of interest and importance to students. Beginning with an introductory essay that defines and overviews the past and present of social issue, each book proceeds to analyze each selected literary work in the context of the social issue. The analysis includes biographical background of the author, a brief synopsis of the novel (or short story), historical context of the work with discussion of the specific concerns and perspectives the author addresses, stylistic analysis and where appropriate, brief excerpts from any supporting documents such as letters, memoirs, government publications, speeches, newspaper articles etc to help contextualize the work. The selection of literature encompasses both contemporary and canonical works, and may include young adult literature titles as well as adult fiction. The majority of titles are those taught in the High School English curriculum. Each section closes with further suggested readings.
