Sports enthusiasts and history students will enjoy exploring the origins of their favorite sports in this new series, and learning what those sports and games say about their socities. Beginning with ancient times through the nineteenth century, each volume is arranged by geographic regions of the world, so students may discover all the sports and games that originated in that area. They can compare and contrast the development of a a sport in several different regions and over different time periods. Photos and diagrams illustrate how these ancient games and sports were played, so students may replicate them today. Each volume provides:
a detailed history of where each game was played, by which social classes and ethnic groups or tribes, and the historical evidence researchers used to reconstruct the game as it was originally played
a discussion of the purpose of the game and what skills it built in players
the equipment used and how it was made
rules of play and discussion of how they have changed over time
instructions for recreating equipment and adapting the sport or game for play today
