VIII. ILLUSTRATING A REFERENCE BOOK
Where topic, expected market, and budgets permit, we are eager to
illustrate Greenwood encyclopedias and reference books. Your acquisitions
editor will discuss the number and type of illustrations with you, and
details about them will be in your contract. Many reference works are not
illustrated.
Permissions and Ordering
If you are responsible for supplying images for your work, you must get
permission. See sample
permission letter for the wording that we want you to use. See your
contract rider for specifics if you are unsure as to whether you or
Greenwood is supplying images.
In the case of certain large projects, we will assign a media editor
who will work with you. In certain other cases, we will ask you to submit
photographs or other artwork and reimburse you for your costs, if any, up
to a certain limit. If you would prefer Greenwood to pay the bills
directly, please submit the artwork, along with invoices and directions
for payment, with your final manuscript. We cannot pay the invoices or
reimburse you until your manuscript has been approved and you have
submitted the artwork and invoices. You must stay within the budget
assigned to you. If in doubt, please check with your editor.
It's important that you provide a list of the photos and illustrations
that you wish to include at least a few months before
your manuscript is complete. Do not wait to think about illustrations
after you have finished writing. Although some adjustments may have to be
made later, the earlier that your editor can see your list, especially if
Greenwood is supplying "the art," the more time will be available for
securing good images to enhance your work. Please use the template below,
whether you will be supplying images or requesting them.
If you have photos for your work, please do not embed them
within your text files They must be in separate electronic files
or in hard copy.
We have full guidelines on formatting and obtaining photographs for
reference projects, including suggested archives and methods for dealing
with them in separate guidelines. Please ask your Greenwood editor to
supply these Author-Provided Art Guidelines if you need them.
