Praeger Guidelines
Follow the recommendations of The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition.
  1. Do not use in-text citations. Instead, please use sequential superscript Arabic numbers paired with end-of-book Notes (for single author volumes) containing full reference information; for books with multiple contributors, use end-of-chapter Notes. A comprehensive description of how to use a Notes and optional Bibliography citation style is provided in The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition, on page 594, section 16.3. Keep in mind that notes should appear as Arabic superscripts, numbered sequentially beginning with “1” at the start of each new chapter; do not submit notes numbered 1a, 1b, etc., or as Roman numerals. For information on formatting works cited as endnotes and as bibliographic entries, see The Chicago Manual, chapters 16 and 17.
  2. Notes to figures and tables should appear as footnotes below the image and should not be included with general text notes at the end of the chapter (or book).
  3. Avoid cross-references to other notes, and never cross-reference to other portions of the text on yet-to-be-determined book pages or by using such conventions as "see above" or "see below."
  4. End-of-chapter note sections must be double-spaced in paragraph style. The note numbers in these sections should not be superscripts. Instead, the numbers should be full size and followed by a period. Do not use bottom-of-page footnotes except to acknowledge permission to reprint a chapter. Note that bottom-of-page acknowledgments are only necessary when that location is specifically requested by the copyright holder.
  5. Avoid gender-specific terminology, such as the use of “man” or “mankind” as referring to “human being” or “humankind.” When describing people in general, alternate male and female pronouns, (“he” and “she”). Using plural pronouns (“they,” “their”) to avoid gender generalization is discouraged. Please avoid using awkward constructions, such as “he/she” or “s/he.”
  6. Cite full names on first reference. Thereafter, refer to both men and women by their last names.
  7. Spelling should be in American English, i.e., do not use British spellings. We recommend using the first spelling options offered in Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary.
  8. Be careful and consistent when creating references. Correcting inconsistent reference citations can delay the copyediting and proofing phases of production.
  9. Provide a style sheet that includes an alphabetical list of abbreviations, proper names, organization names, unusual spellings, use of numbers and dates, and anything else that may facilitate continuity of style as you prepare your manuscript and that may be of use as a guide for the copyeditor who will be assigned to line edit your manuscript.
