Library Journal October 1, 2005

"Another beautifully crafted digital product from Greenwood, World Cultures Today (WCT) is a worthy companion to its sister title Daily Life Through History Online. Its content is mostly culled from the publisher's "Culture and Customs" series but also from the "History of Modern Nations" series, Praeger monographs, supplementary articles, CIA World Factbook data, and over 150 authenticated web links to previewed external English, French, and Spanish-language sites. Descriptive articles, accompanied by some 400 maps and 400-plus illustrations, are approximately 1000 words and often include links to chronologies, Tours Through Time, and Spanning the Globe leitmotifs connecting myths and customs around the world. The file will be updated twice a year (beginning in March 2006) with new chronologies and fresh material from newly published "Culture and Customs" books.
How Good Is It? It's a 9.8. The design alone is superb and deserves a 10. While the current content is excellent, I would like to see even more countries and regions represented (Greenwood has already indicated it is planning to do just that).
The Bottom Line An essential addition to all public and high school libraries; World Cultures Today is also highly recommended for academic libraries."

*STARRED REVIEW* Booklist/Reference Books Bulletin November, 1 2005

"The Daily Life Online subscription database, offered by the Greenwood, is a "suite of electronic social history products." ... This historic approach to world civilizations is now complemented by the addition of World Cultures Today: Exploring Everyday Life around the Globe, an overview of contemporary societies based in part on the publisher's Culture and Customs around the World series. The World Cultures Today piece can be added on to an existing Daily Life through History subscription (in which case the price drops), or can be acquired as a stand-alone product. Owned in conjunction, the two databases can be simultaneously searched and cross-referenced.
World Cultures Today features an exceptionally accessible interface. ...Once the search criteria have been established, instances of "hits" allow users to choose from a variety of pertinent information sources, including not only Greenwood print publications but also original commissioned essays, CIA World Factbook entries, and external links that have been screened for accuracy, authority, and availability. Searchers are also directed to chronologies, maps, full-color images and reproductions, further reading selections, and special features such as Tours through Time, which are archival photo-essays, and Spanning the Globe, which are thematic sidebars. ... Researchers will also appreciate the detailed help screens and search tips and tricks.
World Cultures Today is equally useful for checking quick facts, compiling introductory material or conducting in-depth research, and users will appreciate the breadth of information and ease of access. ...Either by itself, or in tandem with its sister database, Daily Life through History, World Cultures Today is highly recommended for senior high, academic and large public libraries.

"This appealing, thoroughly engaging, and easy-to-navigate site is culled in part from Greenwood's "Culture and Customs around the World" series, supplemented by selected Greenwood reference sources and specially commissioned articles. The home page offers myriad ways to find information. Quick Search allows keyword or phrase searching; Advanced Search allows enhanced keyword searching, enables the use of Boolean operators, and offers "Tips and Tricks." One can also search by the broad categories … or by country or region. Search results may be sorted by number of terms found, country, or region. Results are organized by articles, resources, and images tabs, with articles being the most numerous. ...
Searching World Cultures Today could make staying on task a challenge--one is easily led astray by the diverse, fascinating information it offers. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-/upper-level undergraduates, high school students, and general readers."
