Welcome to the June 2007 issue of The American Mosaic newsletter, an insider's guide to the latest enhancements and updates to The American Mosaic suite of digital reference products documenting the American multiethnic experience. Now Available:
Early Review: "The most beautifully designed electronic product I've ever seen"These are the words Cheryl LaGuardia of Harvard College Library uses to describe The Latino American Experience (LAE) in the June 15 issue of Library Journal. Praising the database's volume of content and presentation - "as creatively functional as it is attractive" - her review concludes by recommending LAE for public and school libraries "for its online access to material long overdue for coverage by electronic publishers." New Content for The African American ExperienceThis month 33 new titles were added to the already robust African American Experience, bringing the total number of fully searchable, full-text volumes to more than 400. Ranging from multivolume encyclopedias, such as the three-volume Encyclopedia of American Civil Rights and Liberties (2006) and two-volume Encyclopedia of the Reconstruction Era (2006), to new biographies on Dr. Dre, Billie Holiday, and Lucille Clifton, this content represents an acquisition value of more than $3,500 in print titles. "I love to think of the Internet as a place where people surf, jump in to find new things, but the moment they jump out, they have been transformed, they are new, they look at the world differently. And I think it is very important to provide information that is trustworthy and invites reflection, critical analysis, offers some historical context..."-Latino American Experience Advisory Editor Ilan Stavans This is just one sound bite from our first-ever podcast, which debuts this month on The Latino American Experience (and can also be heard on the integrated American Mosaic site). In a wide-ranging discussion, Dr. Stavans shares his thoughts on the immigration debate, Spanglish, and the digital divide. The interview marks the first of many discussions Dr. Stavans plans to have with Latinos working in a variety of fields. To listen or download, click here.
