Tackling the Issues of the Day
Presenting evocative perspectives, inviting reader feedback, and highlighting issues of concern to today's Latinos, The Latino American Experience Blog, "En mi opiniòn," went live in October 2007. Featuring essays and podcasts by LAE Advisory Editor Ilan Stavans and other guest writers, the blog is accessible free at http://lae.greenwood.com/blog.
Initial posts on the blog feature essays on the educational achievement gap and on controversial immigration activist Elvira Arellano by Dr. Stavans, as well as a memoir by LAE Advisory Board member Irma Flores-Manges about her family's centuries-long history living along the Texas-Mexico border and Library Journal mover and shaker Loida Garcia-Febo's essay on immigrant advocacy.
Coming Your Way - 40 Volumes of New Content (a $4,050 value)
Look for new content to become available in both The African American Experience and The Latino American Experience this month. More than 20 new titles will be added to each site. These new works include Latinas in the United States: A Historical Encyclopedia, an award-winning, three-volume work from Indiana University Press; Encyclopedia of Antislavery and Abolition, Encyclopedia of American Race Riots, Encyclopedia of Slave Resistance and Rebellion, and Icons of Hip Hop, all two-volume sets from Greenwood; book-length biographies of Alex Rodriguez, Bob Marley, Shaquille O'Neal, and more. Altogether more than 40 volumes of content will be added to The American Mosaic over the fall, bringing the total number of volumes to well over 500, or a total book-by-book acquisition value of over $55,000.
Finding What You Want Just Got Easier
This summer, we streamlined access to The American Mosaic's large cache of over 10,000 images and primary documents. The new Image and Primary Source Indexes can be found in the Additional Resources section on the home pages of The African American Experience, The Latino American Experience, and the combined American Mosaic. These easy-to-use indexes provide users with direct access to over 5,900 images (photographs, maps, and illustrations) and 5,800 primary sources (letters, legal findings, treaties, laws, and more).
Email Capability
This fall, American Mosaic users will be able to email text, links, or search results to themselves or fellow Mosaic subscribers. Users can send messages as either text or HTML. Any images in the body of the text will also be included in the email.
