Topic Guides Target Research Tools

The American Mosaic's new Topic Guides feature will help users conduct targeted investigations on major topics in multiethnic history and culture. Subscribers will get a preview of the new feature in February with a Topic Guide on slave narratives. Designed to facilitate research and provoke classroom discussion, the Slave Narrative Topic Guide includes an introductory essay; image essay; and links to biographies of key figures, primary documents, lesson plans, timelines, and related content and images. The new feature gives beginning and advanced researchers all the tools necessary to understand and explore the Slave Narratives. Future topics will include the Harlem Renaissance, Borderland culture, Malcolm X, and Cesar Chavez.

Ilan Stavans' Blog Tackles Latino Issues

Ilan Stavans Presenting evocative perspectives, inviting feedback, and highlighting issues of concern to today's Latinos, The Latino American Experience blog, En mi opinión, went live this fall. The blog, which features essays and podcasts by LAE Advisory Editor Ilan Stavans and guest writers, is accessible for free at http://lae.greenwood.com/blog. Since launch, En mi opinión has hosted essays and podcasts on immigration, Lou Dobbs, the digital divide and education gap, and Hispanic veterans' reaction to Ken Burns' exclusion of Latino WWII vets from his documentary The War.

New Latino Lesson Plans

latino experience In November, we added 23 new lesson plans on Latino history and culture, including four new Spanish-language activities. Other classroom assignments focus on history, social studies, language arts and literature, and art history and popular culture. These latest classroom resources bring The American Mosaic's total number of lesson plans to well over 100. The new lesson plans are available for free at http://lae.greenwood.com/classroom.

40 Volumes of New Content (a $4,050 value)

In November, more than 40 new titles were added to The African American Experience and The Latino American Experience. New works included Latinas in the United States: A Historical Encyclopedia, an award-winning three-volume work from Indiana University Press, as well as two-volume encyclopedias on antislavery and abolition, race riots, slave resistance and rebellion, and hip hop, bringing the total number of volumes to well over 500, or a total book-by-book acquisition value of more than $55,000.
