The Path to Paradise
The Inner World of Suicide Bombers and Their Dispatchers
By Anat Berko
Foreword by Moshe Addad
Translated by Elizabeth Yuval

“An astounding document—a penetrating look into the souls of the suicide bombers and their dispatchers.” George P. Fletcher
Columbia University,
author of Romantics at War:
Glory and Guilt in the Age of Terrorism

Suicide bombers are often compared to “smart bombs.” From their dispatcher's point of view, they are highly effective, inexpensive forms of weaponry. Yet they also have histories, stories, beliefs, desires-the inner world of all human beings. The Path to Paradise is a unique look at one of today’s most mystifying types of individuals, as well as their dispatchers.

The Coming Balkan Caliphate
The Threat of Radical Islam to Europe and the West
By Christopher Deliso
Foreword by Loretta Napoleoni

“Anyone imagining that Moslem extremists must be seen as a threat only east of Suez should read Chris Deliso's alarming accounts of their activities in parts of the Balkans made vulnerable by wars and poverty.” David Binder
The New York Times
Central and Eastern
European correspondent, 1961-2004

The proliferation of foreign fundamentalist groups has had a cancerous effect on traditional Balkan Islamic communities, challenging their legitimacy in unprecedented and often violent ways. The Coming Balkan Caliphate shows that although the 9/11 attacks caused a partial reassessment of Western policy, it may already be too late for a region still largely ignored.

An (Un)civil War of Words
Media and Politics in the Arab World
By Mamoun Fandy

Focusing on al-Jazeera and other Arab networks, Fandy examines the battle between the Arab world and the West through the popular medium of television. An (Un)civil War of Words explores how autocratic governments control the media in order to preserve their own power while simultaneously engaging in a war of words with their neighbors, the West, or often both.

The Terrorist Conjunction
The United States, the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, and al-Qa'ida
By Alfred G. Gerteiny
Foreword by Jean Ziegler

“Lucidly written, rigorously argued, informative and interesting... Scholars and policymakers will benefit from the research and analysis presented here. So will anyone with a serious interest in understanding global politics in the 21st century.” Dr. Bulent Gokay
Keele University

Many contemporary analyses of terrorism’s causes fail to examine the role of U.S. foreign policy, and even less attention is paid to the role of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Terrorist Conjunction discusses the seminal causes of contemporary transnational terrorism, particularly the grievances inherent in the persistent Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Customer Focus: Lewis & Clark College

Lewis & Clark College of Portland, Oregon is a liberal arts school with roughly 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Its College of the Arts and Sciences houses one of the top international affairs departments in the country. In order to maintain this high level of excellence, the department and school have been quick to adopt new technology to better meet the needs of students and faculty. One of these trends is the growing need for remote access to traditional book collections.

Professor Bob Mandel, Chair of the International Affairs Department, was the school's earliest and most enthusiastic advocate for adopting Praeger Security International Online as a research database. He recognized the uniqueness of the product, with its 600 full-text-searchable titles, as a carefully planned, high-end research tool. Teaching courses in national security and warfare, Professor Mandel personally takes his students to the Watzek Library to demonstrate and encourage use of the database. He had this to say about PSIO:

“The moment I read about PSI Online, I had my institution acquire it immediately, and I have not been disappointed since. The full-text search of an excellent set of books in the field of security studies makes this database invaluable, as no other alternative allows one to find exactly the topic one wants in books in this field. Rather than the limited search engines that look at just titles, authors, abstracts, or keywords, PSI Online allows you quickly and efficiently to scan the full text of books... For students in my security and war courses, and for my extensive scholarship for publication on security-related research topics, there is simply no substitute.”

As a small community with a state-of-the-art library, Lewis & Clark offers its students unique opportunities. All first-year students are required to participate in its Core program, Explorations and Discovery, which is designed to promote sophisticated approaches of intellectual inquiry. Students develop the skills necessary to conduct essential electronic research, a goal to which Praeger Security International remains committed.
